LP chieftain carpets Delta govt for abandoning ongoing, awarded road projects for new ones

…as Oborevwori proposes another #167b supplementary appropriation

A chieftain of the Labour Party in Delta state, Mr Best Obodo has taken swipe at the outcome of the inaugural State Executive Council (SEC) meeting of the Sheriff Oborevwori administration on Wednesday.

“Thinking out of the box, if the MORE AGENDA is for the good of the masses, we should be thinking of swiftly concluding the existing and almost abandoned projects.

“The Obidugbo road; the Isheagu-Ewulu road, which is more of a death trap now; the all-governors-tenure Asaba-Ugheli-Warri road that was awarded by H. E. Ibori and till date its turning to a misery.

“What about our abandoned medical centres across the state? How about the fact that so many communities in Delta State have no electricity?

“In as much as that road need to be constructed, are they truly our priority for now? Who decided this for us? These approvals for the construction of new roads was simply to create avenues for fresh siphoning of the State treasury”, he summed.

The Delta State Executive Council had Wednesday approved the construction of several roads across the three senatorial districts of the State.

According to the State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, the State Executive Council approved the reconstruction of Upper and Lower Erejuwa Roads in Warri, Rehabilitation of Esisi Road from Warri Sapele Road to Estate roundabout with a spur to Nana College to link Ajamimogha in Warri.

Furthermore, “Rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of the failed sections of PTI Road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area; rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of Oviri Court-Adagbrasa Road in Okpe Local Government Area.

“Rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of Ohorhe-Adagbrasa-Ugolo-Okuodiete road with a spur from Adagbrasa to Ughwagba community to Okan junction along the Eku-Osubi-Effurun Road in Okpe Local Government Area.

“Construction of roads around Otovwodo junction in Ughelli North Local Government Area; Construction of Nsukwa-Umute-Adonte Road Phase 1 from Nsukwa to Umute in Aniocha South Local Government Area.

“Remedial works for the failed approach to the bridge at Bedesegba along Ohoror-Bomadi Road in Bomadi Local Government Area.”

Briefing Journalists earlier at the end of the SEC meeting, Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen, said SEC also approved the sum of N167 billion as 2023 supplementary budget.

Recall that the Delta State Government, in the twilight of the Dr Ifeanyi Okowa administration, had as well obtained a #71 billion supplementary budget in this same fiscal year to complete ongoing projects across the state.

He said Exco also granted approval for N40 billion credit facility offer to the 25 local government councils in the state to defray substantial part of outstanding retirement benefits to local government pensioners.

“Another sum of N10 billion was also appoval as Social Investment to fund palliatives for Deltans. This was part of decisions reached at the maiden State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Wednesday at Exco Chambers, Government House, Asaba”, the Economic Planning Commissioner stated.

Ekedayen noted that the #10 billion will complement the #5 billion and trucks of grains from the Federal Government for the provision of palliatives for the less privileged, people living with disabilities, widows, women, youths and the aged in the society.
